I have always been interested in history. The past is the
progenitor of the present but not everyone views it with the
same lens. Was the Civil War fought over slavery or States’
rights or preservation of the union? So, many try to use their
narration of the events of the past to justify their current beliefs
and actions.
They would “Make America great again. There is a lot to unpack
in this little phrase. Trump supporters want us to believe that
we are a fallen nation and they want to return to a time when
life was good. When exactly was that and good for who? There ,
of course, no clear answers. Many are unhappy and cast about
to find the cause of malaise. Their anger typically these others,
people who don’t think or look like them. This is the shorthand
for people who want to see everything in black and white. They
lean into their hate and anger with a total lack of interest in
what the end result will be. They didn’t like the results of the
2020 election so they paved the way for the January 6th
insurrection. The peaceful transfer of power is on the chopping
block.
The murder of innocent Black people in Buffalo is also a result
of this willful propagation of hate. Is this the kind of America
they want? They hang on to their guns to protect themselves
from the revolution that they are fomenting. There are dead
children in Texas. Is this constant violence their dream of a
better America? So they want to return to the time when
Whites were supreme. Is political power a birthright given to
people of lighter skin? Rather than accept the demographic
changes that will put them in the minority, why not pine for the
good old days of Jim Crow.
I think a portion of the electorate are so wrapped up in this fear
and hate that they are willing to destroy our democracy so that
their politicians will have the final say on legislation and laws.
They don’t have the foresight to see what the end results of
their demagoguery will be. They champion people like Victor
Orban, Hungary’s pro-racism anti-democracy leader. Will
someone like him lead us to a happy and prosperous future?
Our forefathers fought for freedom from a King. I that all that
will be for nothing if we are controlled by a party that will not
accede to the changes that are coming. We will not and can not
let their brand sear the soul of this fine country. They must
accept the will of the people as it is spelled out in our
constitution.
